Algebra 1º and 2º ESO

BEFORE READING

What does Heraldy study?
Can you think of any elements that normally appear in coats of arms?
What can they mean?

Coat of Arms

Once upon a time, there was a knight in shining armour who was riding his beautiful black horse up the hill towards a castle. One of the castle guards was going to stop him to ask him his name, when the sergeant ordered him to let the knight in.
What were you thinking of? You might not know who this knight is, but the symbols in his shield tell you of his noble origin: Look. the disc and the X-shaped cross mean that he has fought in the crusades and he's never been defeated. The sceptre means that he has royal blood in his veins. So, from now on you should pay attention to these things!
Sorry, sir! I will be more careful next time. Now I know that Heraldry is a science based on symbols, answered the guard.
Now listen carefully. A long time ago, I spoke to a Jewish doctor who had read a manuscript which explained how to solve some situations using maths and symbols. I think it's called Algebra and it's all about substituting unknown quantities with symbols or letters and then calculating with the numbers.

Task

During a battle, the King`s men captured three enemy explorers. They asked questions about the enemy army and the explorers said that half of their expedition was infantry and the rest was cavalry and explorers. They only were a quarter of the explorers and there were 80 knights. How many men were there in the enemy expedition?
